The very last post on Cosmo3D (I mean - in our 25hr/day section, then) [19:03 CET by cosmo - 1 Comments]
It is with tears in my eyes and a lump in my throat I'm writing this post; because this isn't a normal one. Not one of all the posts about mod releases, patches, drivers, whatever (and it has become a lot of them up with the years ;-)

However, I feel that this is the right decition to do. Do what? I'll tell 'ya:

In a few hours, the current site will be taken down - and be replaced by the new Cosmo3D. So you might ask - isn't the site good as it is? Well, the answer might be yes, but we all feel that we need a makeover, and we hope this will be a positive somehow.

The news section we are having now will be taken down. We apologise for all our frequent news readers for that, but there are a number of reasons for why the choise fell on that decition. After two years and 16 days of gaming news coverage, we have grown to be a decent site with 20-30 updates every day. Though we have a news crew that consists of four guys, I have to say that I have to take most of the cake myself, with 97% of the news posts... Anyways, with more time spent on school, etc, etc - it's a change we'll enjoy.

But sure, I luv' the crew. But most of all I luv' you visitors!

So what's new then, good ole' bud. Well, the big news isn't a new design. But the last weeks I have worked hard on scriping in Perl/ASP and stuff, and now I'm proud to launch the Cosmo3D Headline Tracker. Basically, you'll see the most recent headlines from the big gaming sites around. You can select from 6 categories, and 37 various sites dedicated to a specific subject.

Just choose your colors, image loading speeds, in addition to your favorite sites (except for us, of course =) and off to go!

We'll then have a lot of time left. What to do then? Well, what do you want? We can spend the time on reviews, interviews, or maybe improving the link databsase. Mail me and express your feelings.

So. Enought of the crap. I just want to say that it has been a nice and indeed instructive era of gaming news reporter at Cosmo3D. Now - we hope we'll stay as your preferred gaming portal.

Cosmic Wrist - "The Personal Touch" [22:36 CET by cosmo - 1 Comments]
Well, folks... Just hold it there - 'cause there will be big changes to the site. I can't tell you what we are going to do at this stage, but I'll come back to that soon.

On the cosmic personal subject, I'm going to my cabin for a little vacation type of rest tomorrow, and I'll be back on Sunday. Really looking forward to that! Let's hope the news crew can cover the big happenings until I get back, then. See ya soon - exciting stuff.

Tread Marks Review [15:31 CET by cosmo - Post a Comment]
I just finished my review of Tread Marks, the new Battle Tank Combat and Racing title from Longbow Digital Arts - you can check it out right here. And here's a snip for your enhanched pleasure:

It might be a little stupid that the gravity and speed of the tanks is like a normal racing car, but what the heck. It's fun, and indeed perfectly simple! When we're putting together the small issues and the whole game experience - Tread Marks is a great game, which is easy to pick up, and fun to play - for a long time. Indeed one of the best racing and combat games to hit the market for a long time. If you are a racing fan, or just enjoy blowing tanks up (who doesn't) - I strongly recommend this game.

Carmack on Zoid leaving id [13:40 CET by cosmo - Post a Comment]
This post on the \. Forums has comments from id Software's code master John Carmack regarding yesterday's announcement (story) by Zoid that he's leaving the company to start working for Retro Studios. Here goes:

I had talked with Zoid about it a few times over the years, and I think he is making a pretty good decision.

It wasn't always clear from the outside, but Zoid was a remote contractor, not an employee. It was a low key relationship that worked out well for all of us. He stayed in canada and basically worked on whatever he liked, because I thought he had pretty good judgement. He had responsibility for the linux ports and the CTF code, but much of his time was his to allocate as he wanted.

With Loki now picking up the maintenance of the linux port (as well as my steadily increasing involvement with linux), and a new game design starting at Id, his choice was basically to either go develop a brand new Q3 mod by himself, or go work for one of the many gaming companies that had been trying to hire him.

We weren't interested in bringin on another core programmer at id, especially another one with immigration hassles (we have had enough issues with that for a small company). We would have been happy to continue the current arrangement indefinately, but he wanted to get out of the holding pattern.

Another thing he mentioned that I am sympathetic to is the desire to get a bit out of the community limelight. Being a public figure of some note isn't always all it is cracked up to be.

We are parting on the best of terms (leaving right AFTER a project completes is the considerate way to go). He is going to finish up the Quake2 linux updates (better X/GLX support), even if he has to complete the work from his new job.

Spotted that over on The Shack.

Dave "Zoid" Kirsch leaves id Software [12:45 CET by cosmo - 1 Comments]
id Software's programmer Dave "Zoid" Kirsch, the man behind the famous Threewave CTF for Quake, Quake II, and Quake III Arena - has made an update to his .plan file, announcing that he will be leaving the company to start developing games for Nintendo’s next generation game console - working for Retro Studios. Here's the sauce:

In September of 1996, I made a small modification to the popular id Software game Quake and called it ThreeWave Capture the Flag. That simple modification grew into the last three and a half years of working with id Software and the Quake community. The job that id Software gave me over this period has been very rewarding. It has also been a lot of fun. I have enjoyed watching the community grow. I was also overwhelmed at having been able to work on a series of some of the most amazing games ever created. But, like all good things, it must come to an end.

I feel that I have learned a lot in my time with id, but I find myself looking for new challenges. I have decided that in order to pursue them, I must leave my association with id Software. Having done so, I plan on exploring new opportunities.

My contract with id terminates at the end of this month (Feb). My zoid@idsoftware.com address will probably stop forwarding to my permanent address shortly after that. My permanent address is zoid@threewave.com for people that wish to reach me.

I would like to thank id Software (and especially John Carmack) for giving me such great opportunities, and allowing me to work with all the talented people there. I am going to miss it.

In March, I will begin a new position at Retro Studios, http://www.retrostudios.com/. I look forward to joining the team there and working on some exciting new projects.

So long and thanks for all the captures.

Good ole' Hugh Hancock has let me know that Rick Jones 2, a new Quake II movie by P1mpslap Productions, has been released - and you may snag it from Machinima.com in two flavors; both the preferrable Quake II .dm2 format, in addition to a Real Video file. I must say that it was cool, and according to my clock - it lasted for about 20 mins.
